African Americans in Westchester
The Hills Community

All blacks became free in New York State with the passage of the law of 1817. The law stated that all African Americans in New York State who were born before July 4, 1799, would be free as of the 4th of July, 1827. By 1850 the African American population of Westchester had grown to 2000 persons, according to the federal census of that year.
