The Lawrence Park Historic District in the village of Bronxville was known almost from its inception as an area that welcomed artists, albeit successful ones. Many of the stately homes that were built there included large artists’ studios. This is a photograph of Will Hicok Low in his studio working on a wall panel for the old Waldorf-Astoria Hotel on 34th Street in New York City. The trap door in the floor on the right side of the photograph allowed the artist to work on upper sections of his painting without having to stand on a ladder. Low was a well-established painter who worked in a neoclassical style known as American Renaissance.
