Around the turn of the 19th century, slavery was gradually abolished in New York State.This letter from the City Marshall of Charleston, SC, to the Post Master of New Rochelle concerns George Markinson, a slave from New Rochelle, who had been recently freed by his owner, Elias Guion. Markinson had arrived in South Carolina with no papers to prove he had been freed; the City Marshall, therefore, sought to verify his status with New Rochelle’s Post Master.
