This is the first of several deeds transferring ownership of the land that has become the Town of Bedford from Native Americans to English settlers. According to the deed the land was known as a “certain parcel of meddow and upland commonly called and known by the Hopp ground.” It was so called because of a wild crop of humulus lupulus, more familiarly known as an ingredient in beer, found there.
