Many private academies were founded in the years following the Revolutionary War. Founded in 1807 and opened in 1809, the Bedford Academy counted among its alumni John Jay’s grandson; the first American Catholic cardinal, John McCloskey; and Civil War general Philip Kearny.
Unlike many of its counterparts, Bedford Academy admitted girls as well as boys. The building survives and now houses the Bedford Free Library
