Insignia of the 6th NYHA

After the call came for three-year volunteers, official records show many more Westchester men signed up. The 6th New York Heavy Artillery (NYHA), raised in Yonkers, is the unit most associated with Westchester. Other companies associated with Westchester include the 4th New York Cavalry, the 5th Independent Battery and the 1st Mounted Rifles.

Even as the volunteers left for the South, life continued apace in Westchester. The first gaslights went up along Yonkers streets in 1861. A new bridge was built over the Harlem River. Fishermen petitioned the Board of Supervisors to remove restrictions prohibiting oyster fishing during the months of July and August.
